Sapelo Island is a 16000 acre barrier island on the Georgia coast and is the home of the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Reserve. The island is operated by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and is the site of the Univeristy of Georgia Marine Institute, the African-American community of Hog Hammock and the Coffin-Reynolds mansion.
