Blue Ridge Rifles
The Blue Ridge Rifles precision drill team which has destinguished itself and NGCSU was originally organized in 1950 as a drill team to perform at parades and other events . The platoon named themselves the Blue Ridge Rifles in 1958 in honor of a Company of Lumpkin County and north Georgia men who volunteered to fight with the Confederate Army in the War Between the States. The Confederate unit organized in 1861 was designated Company E, Phillip's Legion Georgia Infantry and commanded by John Hamilton. In 1864 Jesse McDonald, a Dahlonega native and member of the unit was promoted to captain and became commander of Company E which was known by Georgians as the Blue Ridge Rifles. Captain McDonald's home still stands in the Yahoola Creek Park. (This information was obtained from various internet sources.)
